Trade Union and Contractor Donate to Unit 4 High Schools

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Champaign’s Centennial and Central High Schools each received a $12,000 donation from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 149 and A&R Mechanical Contractors to assist their Career and Trade Education programs.  Representatives presented checks at the Nov. 12 Unit 4 Board of Education meeting. Donations will assist the construction of new welding rooms at each high school.

Champaign Unit 4 School District announced one administrative appointment at its Tuesday Board of Education meeting.

Amy Meron Named Assistant Principal at South Side Elementary Nov. 12, 2019

Meron served as a licensed School Psychologist for Unit 4 Schools since 2016. Prior to joining the district, she worked as a school psychologist for 10 years in Wheaton (Ill.) Community School District 200 and two years in Danville (Ill.) Community School District 118.

Rural bus routes cancelled on Tuesday, Nov. 12

Due to weather conditions, Champaign Unit 4 School District has cancelled rural bus routes for Tuesday. Non-rural routes are not affected by this cancellation.

Board of Education Approves Capital Improvements and Maintenance Plan

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Champaign Unit 4’s School Board unanimously approved a five-year Capital Improvements and Maintenance Plan at its meeting Monday evening. The District will move forward with capital projects and purchases necessary for maintenance and repairs through 2024.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) today released the annual Illinois Report Card, which provides a detailed look at each school’s progress on academics, student success, school culture and climate, and financial investments. Carrie Busey Elementary headlined Unit 4’s data with exemplary status, performing in the top 10 percent of all schools across the state and with no underperforming student groups.

Central H.S. Musicians selected to participate in state ensembles

Dozens of Central High School students are headed to Olivet Nazarene University next month to participate in two music festivals. These students will be playing as part of the Illinois Music Education Conference District 3 Honors Ensemble. The students auditioned for this honor earlier this month. They will be playing in a Jazz Festival on Nov. 2 and a Concert Festival on Nov. 16 with other students in the area.  Both Festivals are being held at Olivet Nazarene University. 

Annual Warm-A-Kid Coat Drive

Once again, Champaign Unit 4's Center for Family and Community Engagement will sponsor its annual "Warm-A-Kid" program. The primary goal of this program is to ensure that no student in Champaign Schools is without a coat, hat, or gloves during the winter season. 

Unit 4 Named ISBE Gold Circle of Quality Recipient for Early Childhood Education

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Three Champaign Unit 4 schools earned 2019 Gold Circle of Quality recognition by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Stratton Academy of the Arts, the International Prep Academy, and the Champaign Early Childhood Center were among 142 public-school based early childhood sites receiving the Gold Circle of Quality. These schools meet or exceed the highest goals for quality determined by ExceleRate Illinois, the state’s system for supporting continuous improvement among early learning providers.

Literacy Grants to Benefit Pair of Unit 4 Schools

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A pair of Champaign Unit 4 schools were recently named grant recipients by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. As two of only 24 Illinois Youth Literacy grants, Bottenfield Elementary and Edison Middle School are able to expand their libraries and provide additional opportunities to students.

Champaign Unit 4 School District is excited to share its recent progress on the Edison Middle School renovation design with families, neighbors and community members.

A 30-minute presentation at 5:30 p.m. will outline the latest developments, including further designs and the phasing plan. Attendees can then visit stations to view plans up close and speak to members of our team.

Five Unit 4 Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.  – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced five Champaign Unit 4 students as part of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Three of the five district honorees attend Centennial High School (Anushka Agrawal, Min-Seung Kang, and Juilann Xu) and two are at Central (Duncan Bruce and Davin Yoo).

Due to the forecast heat index, Champaign Central High School will dismiss at 1:05 p.m., Thursday, September 12, 2019.  Both Yellow and MTD buses will be available to take students home.  Athletic and band practice schedules must follow high-heat guidelines, as well.  Coaches and directors will communicate with participants about any changes to their schedules.  Marching Band will not go to Centennial during the school day.

Unit 4 and United Way Partner to Help Young Students Prepare for Kindergarten

Champaign Unit 4 Schools, in partnership with the United Way, held Kindergarten Readiness Camps in July to help engage families in preparing their young students for the start of school. Three separate two-evening camps were held at Stratton, Garden Hills, and Booker T. Washington Elementary Schools.

Unit 4 Art Department Earns State Honor

Champaign Unit 4 Schools earned the 2019 Art Education Program of the Year honor as selected by the Illinois Art Education Association (IAEA). Unit 4 will receive its award at the 2019 IAEA Conference, held Nov. 22 at the Q Center in St. Charles, Ill.

Champaign Unit 4 art teachers balance being practicing artists and excellent art educators. The program currently features 21 art teachers with a combined 213 years of service to Unit 4 students. 

Unit 4 seeks applications for community members to serve on district Finance Committee

The Champaign Unit 4  Finance Committee seeks to increase community/stakeholder awareness of finance issues and provide an opportunity for informed, representative feedback

The committee will meet at least quarterly to discuss budget sources and uses, the tax levy, borrowing and audit matters and the financing of matters of equity and capital construction.  The committee will also discuss funding of proposed new, continued and discontinued programming along with select major purchases and contracts.

Centennial High School student receives scouting's highest rank

Another Centennial High School student has received the Boy Scouts of America's highest rank. It's an achievement only a small percentage of boy scouts can tout.

Jordan Alexander is part of Champaign Troop 1310 and through his commitment, received the Eagle Scout Award.

In order to achieve Eagle Rank, Alexander had to meet several requirements, including earning at least 21 merit badges and completing a service project.
